Babies with HIV - a good thing?

Colorado has proposed that all pregnant women receive a mandatory HIV test. I am opposed to such a mandatory test as this is an infringement of basic civil liberties. However, Colorado senator Dave Schultheis has stated his opposition to the bill on the grounds he fears that it would reduce the number of babies born with HIV. His theory is that seeing babies born with deadly diseases will help change immoral behavior.

His quote:

"What I'm hoping is that, yes, that person may have AIDS, have it seriously as a baby and when they grow up, but the mother will begin to feel guilt as a result of that," he continued. "The family will see the negative consequences of that promiscuity and it may make a number of people over the coming years begin to realize that there are negative consequences and maybe they should adjust their behavior."

Bizarre.

While I believe that we should not reward bad behavior, the idea that we should wish that an innocent child should contract a horrible disease as an object lesson is, frankly, repulsive. I hope that the true Christians in Colorado quickly disassociate themselves with this guy.

  1. Wow... Though I do not agree with his reasoning, I do feel that AIDS testing in pregnancy would increase brutal abortions.

I don't believe that a baby should be brutally murdered because he/she may have AIDS.
