When Faith Kills

Evangelist Billy Joe Daugherty died Sunday morning at the age of 57. Daugherty was an advocate of the Word of Faith theology. The Word of Faith theology is basically a combination of Christian Science and traditional Christianity. http://www.newson6.com/global/story.asp?s=11553404 Christian Science was founded by Mary Baker Eddy in 1866. The basic premise of Christian Science is a denial that sickness and evil are real things. In the Christian Science view, bad things are only real if we believe them to be real. As such, if we have positive thoughts, we will not get sick or have difficulties. Basically it is a denial of reality. In the 20th century a sect of Christianity melded Christian Science into traditional Christianity. This sect later became known as the Word of Faith or Prosperity gospel. Peeing on Jesus is funny and edgy

Image
In a recent HBO Curb Your Enthusiasm episode, the protagonist, Larry David, urinates on a picture of Jesus. This has sparked some controversy amongst some Christians. HBO executives responded with the following statement: Anyone who follows Curb Your Enthusiasm knows that the show is full of parody and satire. Larry David makes fun of everyone, most especially himself. The humor is always playful and certainly never malicious. One wonders if HBO would consider it to be “humorous” and “playful” if a Christian comedian should piss on a picture of Mohammed or the Star of David? http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-2044-Atheism-Examiner~y2009m10d28-HBO-repsonds-to-Larry-David-peeing-on-Christ-controversy

An Interview with a Real Life Indiana Jones

Image
I had the pleasure today to interview the real life Indian Jones – Richard Reeves. Richard Rives is a famous Christian personality who has conducted various archeological searches for the Ark of the Covenant and Noah’s Ark. Mr. Rives made worldwide news when he claimed to have found the remains of Noah’s Ark in modern day Turkey. Recently, Mr. Rives has been promoted by the popular conservative on-line news web site, WorldNetDaily.com . Mr. Rives advocates a theology that maintains Christianity has been corrupted by paganism. For example, Mr. Rives believes that Easter and Christmas are pagan holidays that should not be observed by Christians. While I do not advocate a specific religious point of view on my blog, I do think it is important to understand the religious people that have influence in politics and culture. Mr. Rives and his ideas have definitely been influential concerning the Christian Right and the Republican Party.
