Miss USA Pageant is Gay
A controversy erupted when Miss USA contestant, Carrie Prejean, was asked a question if she supported gay marriage. She said that she did not personally support gay marriage. This caused Perez Hilton (a gay guy) to have a hissy fit.There is so much wrong with this on so many levels. Why do we care what a Miss USA contestant thinks of gay marriage? Why do we have a guy that does not find women to be sexually attractive as a judge in a beauty pageant? Why must all beauty contestants look like men in drag?
The thing about this that disturbs me is not so much that it was raised -- although it does seem irrelevant -- but that she was clearly not entitled to her opinion. It was a question that in the eyes of the asker (as well as the eyes of many others apparently) had only one right answer. That's how minority perspectives get translated into non-minority perspectives --> by silencing the majority opinion or discrediting it to such a great degree that it cannot be spoken without punishment.
ReplyDeleteI agree on the substance -- gay people are not killing marriage, straight people killed marriage just fine. But the insidious thing about what Hilton did here -- and I suspect this was his motivation -- was to make it clear that in public discourse there is now only ONE permitted opinion on this issue, and that if you openly utter the other opinion (which happens to still be the majority opinion), you will be punished, ostracized and ridiculed.
That is completely disrespectful of free speech. And a rather ironic tack to take from someone who is whining about his lack of rights and freedoms.
Keith Lewis, executive director of Miss California USA/Teen USA, wrote a supportive letter to Hilton, condemning Prejean.
ReplyDelete"As co-executive director of Miss CA USA and one of the leaders of the Miss CA family, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss CA USA 2009 believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman," he wrote. "Although I believe all religions should be able to ordain what unions they see fit, I do not believe our government should be able to discriminate against anyone. Religious beliefs have no place in politics in the Miss CA family."
Exactly.
ReplyDeleteOnly one opinion is permitted, even though the opinion that is disallowed is a majority opinion in California currently.
It's just insanity. Very pushy social engineering.
