While Obama was shedding tears over his African-American brother being arrested for disorderly conduct, an audio was released of the Boise police sodomizing a handcuffed man with a taser. This incident did not get much media attention as both the police officer and the suspect are White. While I am not a fan of Professor Gates, he does have point that the police can engage in brutal and illegal behavior. The ubiquitous nature of video and audio devices has captured much police abuse that was previously unknown to the general public. Most people tend to think police act like what they see on TV. For years, the unofficial police standard operating procedure was to beat up any suspect that was uncooperative. The suspect would then be charged with disorderly conduct. Henry Louis Gates, a noted Black Studies scholar at Harvard, was arrested for disorderly conduct. It seems that Gates lost the keys to his house and was attempting to pry the front door open. A concerned neighbor called the police thinking that it may be a burglary. When the police officers arrived and asked to see Gates’ id, he started to yell and act belligerent. According to the police report Gates accused the police officers of being racist. When the police officer asked Gates to step outside to calm the situation, the noted Harvard scholar stated, “Ya, I’ll speak to your mama outside.” Gates was arrested (and later released). It seems another famous athlete has been accused of sexual assault. In this case Andrea McNulty is suing Ben Roethlisberger for an alleged sexual assault that happened a year ago. I believe that this will be a hard case for Andrea to win as there seems to be a lack of evidence. She did not report the crime a year ago, and she is now proceeding with a civil action in an attempt to win a settlement. As a kid who grew up during the Space Age, it is hard to explain the disappointment many of us feel over the lack of progress in space exploration. I remember as a kid reading in my World Book Encyclopedia how we would have Moon colonies by the 1980s. We thought that by the year 2000 most people would be able to travel to the Moon and maybe Mars. Since that time, NASA has lost the “right stuff.” We have been reduced to flying pointless near Earth space shuttle missions. Within a few years the Space Shuttle will be grounded and we will be unable to fly in space. The clip below illustrates the scientific de-evolution we have experienced since the 1970s. The fact that any media personality could serious question if the Earth is a globe is embarrassing to those of us who knew a different America.

It seems that the US Government is funding the development of killer robots that can re-fuel themselves by eating bio-mass (including corpses). One of the things I hate is a “zero tolerance” policy that is found in many schools. While such a policy may sound good in theory, it typically results in zero intelligence. One of the reason we hire school administrators is to exercise judgment concerning issues. In the article below, a high school softball coach was fired based on a “zero tolerance” policy. The coach was good with the kids and never did anything inappropriate. However, at the end of the year he had a barbeque at his house. He invited the team and their parents. While he served no beer, it seems that some of the parents brought some beer to the party. No beer was served to any of the kids. It seems that Dr. Conrad Murray medical expertise is questionable based on his actions. Dr. Conrad Murray may be a qualified doctor. Or he might be the result of pressure for a medical school to meet diversity goals. As Thomas Sowell has noted (Sowell is African American), one of the problems with affirmative action (aka diversity goals) is that it leads to questions if the person is actually qualified to do the job. One of the fundamental questions that face our society is if we should judge people based on their merit or based on their race or sex. If we judge strictly based on merit, we will not have equal outcomes. If we give positions based on hidden quotas, we increase tribalism and resentment. It is amazing how gender roles have changed in the movies and television over the past 30 years. A prime example of the change can be found in Battlestar Galactica. Battlestar Galactica was a 1970s science fiction series that was updated in 2003. In the original series, one of the main characters was a brash, cigar smoking, womanizer known as Starbuck. In the modern version of Battlestar Galactica, the Starbuck character has morphed into a woman. The recent murder of Steve McNair by a young woman illustrates the dangers all professional athletes face. Lots of psycho women like to stalk rich and famous athletes. And one of the most famous American athletes is that of Joey (Jaws) Chestnut. Joey recently won the National Hotdog eating contest by downing an amazing 68 hotdogs in 10 minutes. Six-time titleholder Takeru (Tsunami) Kobayashi, came in second with 64 hotdogs eaten. I think all patriotic Americans were proud to see an American fend off the Japanese threat. I have recently been in hot dog eating training. And I promise if I win, I will be careful to avoid the celebrity stalkers that can be so dangerous.

It seems that NY Times columnist Maureen Dowd has freaked out because Sarah Palin has resigned. Maureen Dowd was the author of the book, “Are Men really Necessary?” Pretty much Dowd has spent her life complaining that she could never catch a man because men are intimidated by her success and intelligence. I saw the John Dillinger movie, Public Enemies, this afternoon. The reviews looked great. And I usually love gangster movies. So my expectations were high. Unfortunately, I found the dialog and the acting to be rather stilted. I actually burst out laughing during scenes that were meant to tug at the heartstrings. Of course, it could just mean that I am a heartless bastard. As the movie was rather dull, I rememberd the old John Dillinger urban myth that he had a giant penis that was later sent to the Smithsonian Institute. That myth originated back in the 1930s with this newspaper photo of the corpse of Dillinger. The urban myth was actually more interesting than the movie.

There was some controversy at the 2009 Black Entertainment TV (BET) awards. The show was dedicated to Michael Jackson, so it attracted much publicity. The controversy started when rapper Lil’ Wayne sang his song Every Girl. While performing this song, they had a bunch of school age girls up on stage dancing to the song. Some people felt the lyrics were inappropriate for little girls. Others thought he was just “keeping in real." I personally had no problem with the show. I would like to see such shows get more exposure.
