Itseems that Tiger Woods was a victim of domestic violence. His trophy wife (ugh… did she get ugly fast) chased him around with a golf club. Evangelist Billy Joe Daugherty died Sunday morning at the age of 57. Daugherty was an advocate of the Word of Faith theology. In a recent HBO Curb Your Enthusiasm episode, the protagonist, Larry David, urinates on a picture of Jesus. This has sparked some controversy amongst some Christians. HBO executives responded with the following statement: Anyone who follows Curb Your Enthusiasm knows that the show is full of parody and satire. Larry David makes fun of everyone, most especially himself. The humor is always playful and certainly never malicious. I think that during this time of reflection after the horrible Ft Hood shooting it is important to remember what makes our armed forces the best in the world. No, it is not superior weapons or training. Our secret weapon is diversity. Our strength is that we have all races, genders, religions and sexual orientations in our armed forces. Unfortunately, due to endless hate and racism of White people and Christians, sometimes good people such as Major Hasan snap. Such an episode reminds us the real victims are not those that were hurt or killed - the real victim was Major Hasan. (Note to self – remove link below before publishing to blog. I love to read old magazines. Reading old magazines is a way to time travel into the past to see how the world looked. What is great is that you can learn history from looking at the actual media that was read by the people of that time. Far too often historians or “educators” will provide a spin of an era through a lens of current mores and propaganda. By looking at the source material from that time, you can bypass the current fashions and prejudices and gain a better understanding of how America actually looked during a specific era. For better or worse, America has been radically transformed since the year of my birth (1963). By browsing through these magazines you can see how much has changed.
