LAUSD Declares Homework Racist, Classist
The LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District) has decided to reduce homework as homework is somehow "racist". This is in opposition to the Teach For America trend. Teach For America believes that the way to close the "achievement gap" (none dare say IQ) is to have more school and homework. Teach For America has stated that reducing homework is racist. The one common theme is that no matter what happens, it is obviously the fault of White people. That they agree on.
Of course, Asians have posed a rather embarrassing problem. Many have come off the boat, poor and unable to speak English. But now Asians are performing at the level of White kids. Polite Society does not discuss the reasons.
L.A.'s decision to ease up on homework has ignited a small firestorm among educators across the country, seeing as this particular issue is at the core of America's current K-12 reform movement.
Of course, it's easy to say less busywork the better, and students are undoubtedly stoked to hear it. Efforts to level the playing field between the coddled middle class and minorities without the same resources (quickly becoming the majority in L.A.) is noble as well.
On the other hand, we have the young, renegade "Teach for America" mantra -- one that has also rubbed off on the Bill Gates charter-school circle. If schools hold working-class minorities to a lower standard, reformers argue, they'll continue to perform at that level
Great interview really enjoyed it!
